Don't Gotta Be "In The Mood" To Write

Your body ain’t got a switch you can flip when you want to write like a genius. Stop digging in your belly button looking for it and write. Outlining will cure cancer before it’ll cure the bad writing days. Let that friggin’ ridiculous wordsmithing happen. That means you’re writing. It also means you have a future in writing, since that double-thick shitshake will need re-writing. Yes, it feels fantabulous when you awaken with ideas lighting up your brain. Don’t believe your body or your thoughts when they’re telling you, “Eh, I might as well get extra other stuff done instead of writing for that half hour.” You do not have to be any kind of uberhero when you sit down to write. A hundred wor

Writing = Mad Science

Writers, artists, and creators all started their journey by stitching a zombie arm to a pelvis without knowing why or how. That was a metaphor. That book you’re writing? It’s the product of you going all mad scientist. Think of the first time you started creating. Was it writing on receipt tape at the turd retail job you ditched? Or splurging on art supplies only for your first couple pieces to look like antiquated feces? Good! You took the first step. Now take a million more. You’ll step in excrement along the way, but that’s how you learn to avoid it. There are so many little rules and tricks you pick up on the journey to creating art for a living that you can’t count them. (Unless you wri

Break Out Of The Suck Cycle

Don't you just love it when your work sucks? Dumping rumploads of time into learning your craft and producing brilliant art feels friggin’ good. Then you learn some more, create more art, and BOOM! Your old stuff sucks shark dick. You’re not alone. Every creator out there has produced material that sucks more fish dong than they’d ever care to admit. Know how they broke the suck cycle? By learning and returning. Learn and return. Create, then take a break and branch out. Feed your brain some stuff you’ve always wanted to feed it. Devour some podcasts on subjects you’ve been curious about. Watch some classic movies and some abhorrently bad ones. You’ll learn as much from the brilliant materia

Channel Your Insanity

Someone once said, “Make your muse your bitch.” That person didn’t take it far enough. Make your insanity your bitch too. You know it’s there. That cozy bed of crazy you retreat to when work gets rough or when everything starts to feel overwhelming. When you find yourself laughing at the ridiculousness of it all, jot down the ideas that well up in your brainpan. Channel that in a positive way and use it in your art later. Madness used for good is a bank account that you can never overdraw. Writing, painting, and creating take vision. They take caring. And they take time. Within reason, you get to chose when you write and when you don’t. Those moments of crazy, however, strike like lightning
