Griffin-Shit Alchemy

A whole world on a single page!

The short story morsels of One Page Worlds are flash fiction adventures of all flavors. Every Wednesday will feature a complete story in one page, or the first page of what could be a novel or novelette.

Sharing the fun and geekery is the best part of writing! Please tweet or comment with your guesses on what genre, character, and job is central to each tale. Enjoy touring new universes each week with One Page Worlds!

“Domesticated Griffins,” Aelorus blurted to the two witches mad enough to stop at his stand in the crowded bazaar. “My tincture is guaranteed to render years of beast training unnecessary. For less coin than a carpet and less stress than a pet’s mess, you could fly a griffin like this one here.”

The alchemist’s opal and teal robe fluttered in the wind that his un-caged griffin pounded air with his wings. Ticked-off shouts blew back at him from the shoppers. “Asshole,” and, “Gutter wizard,” and other less-than-magical words that Aelorus ignored.

Each witch had an arm wrapped around the other, their eyebrows arched with interest. The hooded one and the dolled-up one. Or were the looks because of the griff pie his beast just squeezed out?

“Taming Tincture,” the hood witch slurred, reaching for a bottle in the wooden stand’s window. “Looks like that old medicine what used to be half liquor half bullshit. This stuff work?”

Aelorus snagged the bottle from the witch’s talons and passed it into the palm of her well-manicured companion. “Not afraid of a teeny test flight, are you ma’am?”

“Vonnie,” she breathed, tucking hair as brown as the griffin’s behind an ear. “Does that tincture stop the monster from defecating all over too?”

Disdain dripped from the nose he used to sniff at her. “Better alchemists than me have failed to stop the various callings of nature that plague us all. Shovels and handkerchiefs are not included.”

Vonnie’s eyes flicked to the space her hooded lover had occupied seconds before. It seemed the alchemist was too busy showing disrespect for her to notice her disappearance. She beamed a ditzy smile at him. “And how much do these enchanting creatures cost to tame? Or to own?”

“Two hundred times the coin that one bottle of Aelorus’s Taming Tincture is worth, miss.”

Noting the man’s change in tone, Vonnie looked anywhere but at the stand her love was currently robbing. “May I fly it? Just for a minute to prove it works?”
