Robed and hooded, the sorcerer entered the surgeon’s office. It might have been the same space as the sorcerer’s lair. Exchange the framed degrees for scrolls, the carpet for limestone, and the fan for a breeze drake, and it just might have been the same. The door closed and both men spoke at the same moment.

“Perform the facial reconstruction I—”

“Your curses will restore youth—”

Their teeth gritted together and trepidation filled the sterile air. While the sorcerer lowered his hood, exposing runes on skin, The surgeon continued. “I have spent half a century changing others’ faces. Improving the lives of others always comes at the price of delaying one’s own.”

“No such thing as a fair reality,” the sorcerer grumbled, words dripping from youthful lips. He tilted his chin high. “See this nose? Got it after my first favor once I was my own master. Witch tried to slap me with her disfigurement once she was younger. How about a deal, doctor?”

Producing a scalpel, the surgeon murmured, “Thirty years for a face.”

The sorcerer caressed the marks on his jaw. “One nose for three decades’ rewind.”

Sunken eyes gaped and flitted.

Absorbing.

Reassessing.

“You first.”
